Life never stands still
and if we attempt to make it do so we lose much of rich
experience. Fourteen years ago Trevor and Jean came to
settle in Martock and, like some rare plant, the village
began to brighten and flourish after the struggling months
of that interregnum. Joyous warmth of faith shone out of
the vicarage – guidance, teaching, help and advice ever
there and always so clear to see that Trevor’s ministry
was to the whole two parishes and not just to members of
the churches. His emphasis upon the central importance
of the Eucharist has brought many into deeper commitment
and a rich, personal relationship with their Lord.
As shepherd of his flock Trevor lead from the front, as
seen in the Old Testament, and not by driving from the
back in the Western way. His teaching in the Lent Studies
and Back to Basics talks must have taken hours and hours
of prayer and application and we have all grown richly
through them. So many people in deep need have been helped,
comforted and guided and become more deeply committed to
God.
Tireless and faithful connections with the schools and
hospitals have brought forth teaching and spiritual growth.
The increase in numbers of services and of prayer and study
groups have deepened our faith and shown us a Saviour who
walks alongside us at all times, involved in all that we
do, with love like no other.
This was no stiff, puritanical, churchy couple – but our
dearest friends, rich in love and caring and laughter,
who truly have opened a window to Heaven for all of us.
In thanking them, then let us not bemoan their leaving
and fear the future without them, but resolve to build
on the faith that we have been given so that it surely
grows.
Farewell, very dear friends and thank you – we will never
forget you.
