The Guardians of Martock Church

Events 2005

The Guardians of Martock Church are independent of the congregation and consist of people from many sections of the Village Community who are dedicated to raising funds for the on-going restoration, repair and upkeep of the Church building and Churchyard.

The site of Martock Church has been a place of worship since Norman times.  Not only is the present Church a Grade I listed building —  parts of the structure dating back to the 1200’s — but it is an important building and an asset for the whole village to enjoy.

It is the second largest parish church in Somerset and featured in Simon Jenkins’s book “England’s Thousand Best Churches”. We appreciate that many who value the Church building are not regular church goers but would like to help with the preservation of the building.

We understand that the congregation of All Saints' is committed to raising about £56,000 this year in order to cover the costs of Ministry and all the expenses of maintaining a place of worship in Martock.  However the cost of maintaining a building as magnificent as All Saints is very high indeed.  A major inspection of the building is made every 5 years by an independent architect and it is very important to develop a fund to ensure that the Church and its surroundings are safe for use by the public, and to guarantee its preservation for the enjoyment of future generations.

The work required by the last inspection in 1997 cost about £50,000.  This sum has now been raised; partly by the Guardians themselves and partly from appeals made to other Charities. It seems unrealistic to assume that future costs will be lower.  The next inspection is due next year, so we need to be prepared.

Martock OnLine - Churches: recent repair work to one of the church windows

The Guardians raise money directly through concerts, talks etc. Also in association with other charities we participate in Fetes, Open Gardens and similar activities. In addition we sell Christmas cards and run raffles and competitions.  Nevertheless the main source of income is direct donations either as a lump sum or by Standing Order.  It is now possible for individuals to give money in such a way that the Guardians can usually reclaim tax.  If you feel that you would like to assist by a single or a regular donation please contact James Hetherington .  Telephone 01935 824472. He will be pleased to send the relevant forms

We hope to increase the annual income by about £5000 per year.  To meet this major challenge we need to widen the net to include as many people as possible.  If 20 new people each contributed £10 a month we would be half way towards the hoped-for increase in income.

The Guardians are Registered Charity Number 1061768.

Music and Social  Events.

It has been proposed to present a series of musical evenings in the All Saints’ Church. These will vary in form and include organ recitals, choirs, soloists, a string quartet, lectures on music (illustrated naturally) recordings and local bands. Each concert will last between one and two hours and refreshment of wine or soft drinks will be available.

These events should be extremely interesting and enjoyable, and we hope that as many as possible of you will attend and bring along friends to swell the throng.

For up-to-date information on these concerts please refer to the events page.
